Pre-conference school and outreach day

Two days before the symposium. A training school for postgraduate and doctoral students on 25 October, and an outreach day for students from local schools on 24 October.

School on Meteoritics

The school aims to motivate bright and talented young minds from Indian universities, colleges, and academic and research institutes to take up a career in planetary sciences. It consists of lectures by subject experts, tutorials, hands-on sessions, group discussions and laboratory visits at the Department of Geology & Geophysics, IIT Kharagpur.

Applications are open. Apply by 5 October 2026. Selected candidates will be notified by 10 October 2026. Attendance is in person; there is no fee to attend the school.

Eligibility

Candidates pursuing MSc (first or final year), MTech, or an Integrated MSc (fourth or fifth year), in Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Remote Sensing or allied subjects.
Candidates pursuing a PhD (first or second year) in the same or allied disciplines.
At least 60% marks, or equivalent grade, in the last examination passed.

Documents to submit

Curriculum vitae, including date of birth, address, present affiliation, and educational background from high school onwards with percentage marks in all subjects.
Statement of purpose, describing your research interests and why you wish to attend the school. One page is sufficient.
Recommendation letter from the Head of the Department, Dean, or a senior faculty member.
No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your institute.

Financial support

Selected participants will be provided travel support (sleeper class by train, or bus), accommodation and food for the duration of the school.
Participants who wish to also attend the symposium on 26–27 October may do so by registering at the student rate. Registration is separate from this application.

Outreach day for school students

A day for students from schools in and around Kharagpur. Talks pitched at school level on meteorites and the solar system, a display of meteorite specimens, and a guided visit to the laboratories in the Department of Geology & Geophysics.

For schools and teachers. Participation is free and by prior arrangement, so that we can plan group sizes and laboratory access. Schools interested in bringing a group should write to metmess2026@gmail.com with the name of the school, a contact teacher, the number of students, and their class level. Details of the programme will be sent to registered schools.
